The practical application of organic silicon monomer DMC in multiple fields and the industry development challenges and trends

Hits: 165 img

As the "core hub" of the organosilicon industrial chain, the application scenarios of organosilicon monomer DMC cover many fields such as building materials, electronics and electrical engineering, new energy, daily chemicals and medical care. Its demand changes directly reflect the development trend of downstream industries. Relying on excellent comprehensive performance, DMC-derived products have become key materials for high-end manufacturing and green development. At the same time, the industry is facing pain points such as overcapacity, price fluctuations and environmental constraints. In the future, it will transform towards high-end, green and collaborative development to achieve high-quality development.
The building materials field is the core application scenario of DMC, accounting for 32.5%, mainly used for the production of room temperature vulcanized silicone rubber (RTV) and high temperature vulcanized silicone rubber (HTV), which are widely used in curtain wall sealing, door and window caulking, waterproof engineering and other fields. The sealant derived from DMC has excellent weather resistance, elastic recovery rate and UV resistance, with a service life of more than 20 years, which meets the demand for the improvement of green building standards. In the electronics and electrical field, high-purity DMC-synthesized thermal conductive silicone grease, potting glue and insulating coatings are used for chip packaging, LED heat dissipation and high-voltage cable protection, effectively improving the reliability and safety of equipment. In 2024, the consumption of DMC in this field reached 192,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 8.7%.
The new energy field is becoming an emerging growth pole of DMC, with significant demand growth in the photovoltaic and power battery industries. In photovoltaic modules, DMC-based silicone rubber is used for junction box sealing and backsheet bonding. In 2024, the consumption of DMC in the photovoltaic field exceeded 60,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 21.5%; in power batteries, it is used for battery pack structural sealing and thermal management, driving DMC consumption of about 43,000 tons in 2024. It is expected that the total demand for DMC related to new energy will exceed 200,000 tons by 2030. In addition, in the daily chemical field, volatile silicone oil derived from DMC is used in shampoos, skin care products and other products to provide a smooth skin feel; in the medical field, high-purity DMC is used to prepare medical catheters, artificial organ coatings, etc., conforming to the trend of localization of medical devices.
At present, the DMC industry is facing many pain points: first, the excessive capacity expansion leads to structural overcapacity. In 2025, the domestic effective capacity was about 3.44 million tons, and the actual output was 2.784 million tons, and the industry once fell into overall losses; second, the price fluctuates sharply. In 2025, the lowest price of DMC reached 10,200 yuan/ton, and the annual average price hit a record low; third, the tightening environmental constraints restrict the industry development due to high energy consumption and high emissions. To address the pain points, the industry has alleviated internal competition through coordinated production restriction and price protection. In early 2026, the price of DMC rebounded to 14,300 yuan/ton, and enterprises gradually achieved profitability.
The future development trend is clear: first, product high-endization, focusing on high-purity and low-cyclomer content products, adapting to harsh scenarios such as semiconductors and medical care; second, green transformation, promoting the circular economy model, realizing the cracking and recycling of waste silicone rubber to DMC, and reducing energy consumption and emissions; third, industrial chain collaboration, leading enterprises layout the integrated capacity of "metallic silicon—DMC—downstream products" to improve cost control capabilities. With the continuous development of downstream high-end industries, the market demand for DMC will continue to optimize, and the industry will gradually get rid of homogeneous competition and achieve high-quality development.
