Promise me that you won’t buy silicone paper for air fryers randomly!

Silicone oil paper is really the "magic partner" of air fryers, and it is also a super blessing for lazy people. Just throw it away after use, and you don't even have to wash dishes!
However, what kind of paper is silicone oil paper? Is it safe for us to buy?

What kind of paper is silicone oil paper?
At present, most of the single-sided silicone oil paper on the market consists of three layers: the outermost layer is paper, the middle layer is the coating layer, and the innermost layer is the silicone oil layer that directly contacts the food. If it is double-sided silicone oil paper, the paper core is in the center, the two sides are the coating layer, and the outermost layer is the silicone oil layer. There are corresponding requirements for the material and composition of each layer.

1
Paper layer
Many silicone oil paper manufacturers will emphasize that the pulp used is log pulp when promoting. But pulp is only a part of silicone oil paper, and it is the part that does not directly contact food.
Although it does not come into direct contact with food, according to the National Food Safety Standard for Paper and Paperboard Materials and Products for Food Contact (GB4806.8-2022), the paper material of silicone oil paper must be made of virgin pulp (including the log pulp advertised by the manufacturer), and recycled pulp cannot be used.

2
Silicone oil layer
The silicone oil used must also be food-grade silicone oil material. Food-grade silicone oil itself is very safe and can withstand high temperatures of 230 to 250 degrees.
Common ones include polydimethylsiloxane, etc., but the materials used in this layer are not absolute. Parchment baking paper made of Quilon C 9 has also been used before. But no matter what material it is, it must meet the requirements of the food safety standards mentioned above.

3
Laminating layer
The laminated layer in the middle is responsible for bonding the silicone oil and paper together, and it can also play a certain blocking role to prevent the silicone oil from penetrating into the paper base. The adhesive in this layer is the most likely to have problems. The raw materials of adhesives are mainly polyethylene and modified polyolefins, and harmful substances such as xylene will exist in the solvent.
It is also mentioned in the "National Food Safety Standard Food Contact Paper and Paperboard Materials and Products" that the adhesive used in this layer must also comply with the corresponding food safety standards, such as the "National Food Safety Standard Food Contact Materials and Products Additives Use Standard" (GB 9685-2016).
It is worth mentioning that since February 8, 2025, our country's newly formulated "National Food Safety Standard Adhesives for Food Contact Materials and Products" (GB 4806.15-2024) has been officially implemented, which also clearly stipulates the types of adhesives that can be used for direct or indirect contact with food.

Therefore, there are clear specifications for the acceptance of paper, silicone oil layer, intermediate coating layer materials and finished products. Generally, silicone oil paper produced by regular manufacturers in accordance with the specifications can be safely in contact with food.
Buy silicone oil paper and look at this point
After confirming that the product is not a "three-no" product, it is recommended that you look at the implementation standard of silicone oil paper.
As a paper product that directly contacts food, the implementation standard of silicone oil paper must be GB 4806.8. If there is this implementation standard and the corresponding certificate of conformity, then you can use it with confidence.
Some manufacturers implement their own corporate standards. It is difficult for ordinary people to specifically inquire about the specific content of corporate standards. However, according to regulations, corporate standards cannot be lower than the corresponding national mandatory standards (GB 4806.8 belongs to the national mandatory standards). So if it is a product produced by a regular manufacturer and implements corporate standards, there is generally no need to worry too much.
Some manufacturers will also provide certification from third-party agencies, including test reports from domestic certification agencies, or reports from well-known foreign testing agencies (such as SGS), etc., and of course it is better to have these test reports or certificates.
Pay attention to temperature and use time when using silicone oil paper
In addition to paying attention when purchasing, you should also be careful when using silicone oil paper, otherwise silicone oil paper may release harmful substances during use.
Many silicone oil papers have instructions on their packaging for applicable temperatures and usage times.
The temperature is generally 220 degrees or 230 degrees (some can reach 250 degrees). You don't have to worry too much when using an air fryer, because the maximum temperature of most air fryers is 200 degrees Celsius. But if you use an oven, you should pay attention when setting the temperature.
Do not put silicone oil paper in when preheating the air fryer. When heating it, you should also press the silicone oil paper with food to prevent the silicone oil paper from being blown up and contacting the heating parts to burn. After burning, the silicone oil paper may release some harmful substances. In addition, after burning, the silicone oil melts and sticks to the food, which will also cause waste.
In addition, the usage time of most silicone oil papers is within 20 minutes or 30 minutes. If you need to heat it for a longer time, you need to replace the silicone oil paper halfway.
