Aerogel felt is a flexible, efficient thermal insulation felt that combines nano-aerogel with inorganic fibers and is specifically used in power battery modules. The main features of aerogel felt are low thermal conductivity, and the thermal insulation effect is 2 to 5 times that of traditional thermal insulation materials, which can effectively reduce the thickness of the insulation layer; secondly, aerogel felt is relatively hydrophobic and can effectively prevent moisture from entering the battery cell; in addition, the characteristics of aerogel felt such as light weight and easy cutting greatly reduce the transportation, installation and use costs. SiO2 aerogel felt composite materials are reinforced by introducing pre-oxidized fiber yarns, glass fibers, ceramic fibers, carbon fibers and other substrates into the SiO2 aerogel process, and finally used between battery cells after die-cutting, coating and other processing processes. Processing and coating mainly prevent fiber dust from falling from aerogel products during vehicle driving.
The report shows that the global sales of aerogel felt for new energy vehicles reached 860 million yuan in 2023, and is expected to reach 6.7 billion yuan in 2030, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 32.3% (2024-2030).
At present, China is the largest production area, accounting for more than 70% of the market share, and North America is also an important production area. The conventional thickness of aerogel felt is 0.5/1/2/3/6/10. Among them, 2mm and 3mm are the mainstream specifications currently used. This product is mainly used in the automotive industry including passenger cars and commercial vehicles.
