In the outpatient clinic of Xiangtan Airenhe Hospital, we often hear doctors use "silicone oil eyes" to describe the eye conditions of some patients. The first time I hear this word may be a little confused: Silicone eye? what? According to Liu Kai, director of Xiangtan Airenhe Hospital, in ophthalmology, silicone oil is mainly used to fill the vitreous cavity. The eyeball filled with silicone oil in the vitreous cavity is called "silicone oil eye".

Recently, a 43-year-old Mr. Zhao came to the Ocular Fundus Clinic of Xiangtan Airenhe Hospital. In July 2019, Mr. Zhao underwent vitrectomy + silicone oil filling in a hospital in Hubei due to "left eye trauma resulting in decreased vision." After he recovered and was discharged from the hospital, Mr. Zhao did not have a timely review due to work reasons and he did not pay too much attention to his eyes. In February this year, his eyes suffered from blurred vision and pain. So, he came to Xiangtan Airenhe Hospital for treatment. Director Liu Kai's inspection found that the silicone oil in the left eye of Mr. Zhao has been emulsified. If it is not removed in time, it may cause increased intraocular pressure and cause vision loss; and the emulsified silicone oil will cause irritation to the tissues of various parts of the eye. It is said that it may cause unfavorable complication and requires timely operation. Recently, Director Liu Kai and his team performed "silicone oil removal + intraocular lens implantation" for Mr. Zhao. After the operation, Mr. Zhao's vision is now recovering well.

After eye surgery, silicone oil needs to be removed in time, otherwise it may cause permanent blindness? In response to this question, Director Liu Kai explained: “Silicon oil filling is a commonly used method in retinal detachment surgery. For some patients with severe retinal detachment, we usually use the combined operation of “vitrectomy + heavy water + silicone oil filling”. It can smooth the reattached and detached retina; however, silicone oil should not be permanently filled in the eye. It is generally recommended to take it out after a period of time. The specific time is judged according to the actual situation of the patient.
