IOTA 25M Methyl Fluorosilicone Oil Selection and Application Verification Method

Hits: 663 img

Is it possible to directly replace the same methyl fluorosilicone oil with a viscosity close to it? One should not only look at the nominal values. When selecting, one should first confirm the test temperature, test method, fluorine content, viscosity range and batch measured values, and then evaluate compatibility, residue, surface defects and long-term stability based on actual working conditions such as defoaming, lubrication, demolding, and hand feel in the cosmetics industry. Ultimately, whether to adopt it should be confirmed jointly by pilot tests, trial production and finished product verification.
The acceptance criteria for different applications are not the same. When used for defoaming in paint and coatings, attention should be paid to defoaming speed, long-lasting defoaming ability, compatibility and surface defects; when used in cosmetics formulations, attention should be paid to skin feel, softness, emulsification stability and formulation compatibility; when used for lubrication or damping, attention should be paid to friction performance, viscosity-temperature characteristics and sealing compatibility; when used for demolding or isolation, attention should be paid to demolding force, continuous demolding times, mold fouling and product surface residue. "Colorless or light yellow transparency, viscosity close" is not sufficient to determine that they can be replaced.
First, compare the viscosity, fluorine content and test conditions under the same conditions.
IOTA 25M is an organic silicon modified polymer with methyl end-capping and side chains containing trifluoropropyl, CAS 115361-68-7. Its viscosity range is 10–100000 mm²/s (25℃), specific gravity 1.00–1.40 (25℃), refractive index 1.3000–1.4000 (25℃), and the viscosity and fluorine content can be adjusted as needed. Viscosity of different suppliers may use different rotors, shear conditions or test methods, and fluorine content may be expressed in different ways, and the values cannot be directly equivalent.
Before making inquiries and submitting samples, both parties should clearly specify the following information:
Material category and chemical composition, confirming that the candidate materials belong to methyl fluorosilicone oil and clarifying the definition of side chain trifluoropropyl content or fluorine content.
Viscosity test temperature, unit, rotor or method, specification range and batch measured values. Avoid substituting only with typical values for delivery limits.
Test method and allowable range for fluorine content or fluorine chain segment proportion.
Test methods and limits for key indicators such as specific gravity, refractive index, volatile matter, moisture, acid value.
Usage, operating temperature, addition amount, contact substrate, formulation system and unacceptable failure phenomena.
The procurement specifications should specify the allowable range, testing methods and acceptance conditions, rather than just a nominal interval. Typical values can be used to understand product characteristics, but they cannot automatically be regarded as a commitment for each batch delivery.
Which differences are worth checking besides viscosity?
Table
Verification items How to compare Relationship with application
Fluorine content / trifluoropropyl ratio Confirm the test method, unit and actual measurement range Effect on solvent resistance, surface tension, hydrophobicity and defoaming performance
Viscosity and viscosity-temperature characteristics Compare viscosity and high/low temperature changes under the same temperature and method Effect on lubrication, damping, coating, dispersion and low-temperature fluidity
Volatile matter and low-molecular substances Agree on test temperature, time and method Attention should be paid to weight loss, odor and contamination in high-temperature, sealed or clean scenarios
Appearance and cleanliness According to the application, agree on color, transparency, impurities and moisture Attention should be paid to appearance defects in applications related to cosmetics, electronics and optics
Compatibility and surface residues Experiment in actual formulation, substrate and subsequent processes Attention to defoaming pinholes, lubrication migration, mold residue and adhesion printing effects
Determine verification priorities according to application
Paint and coating defoaming application
Compare defoaming speed, defoaming persistence, compatibility, leveling and surface defects under actual formulation, mixing conditions, construction methods and drying conditions. Fluorosilicone oil has a low surface tension, and excessive addition may cause pinholes, fish eyes or interlayer adhesion loss. The appropriate dosage should be determined through gradient addition experiments.
Cosmetics skin care and cleansing application
Compare skin feel, smoothness, softening effect, emulsification stability, storage stratification and odor performance in the target formulation system. For products in contact with the human body, attention should also be paid to formulation compliance requirements, irritation evaluation and extractability risks. The suitability of the finished product cannot be judged solely based on raw material or rubber indicators.
Lubrication, damping and buffering application
Compare friction performance, wear, damping characteristics and re-oiling cycle under actual friction pairs, load, speed and temperature range. This product can be used within the range of -50°C to 200°C, with a small viscosity coefficient, but the specific low-temperature start-up, high-temperature retention and sealing compatibility still need to be verified under real working conditions.
Demolding, isolation and shine application
Keep the mold, product material, coating method and amount consistent, observe demolding force, continuous demolding times, mold fouling, product surface gloss and residue. If the product needs to be adhered, sprayed, printed or electroplated later, the subsequent processes should also be included in the acceptance to avoid silicone oil migration affecting surface processing.
Textile, leather feel and hydrophobicity application
Compare feel, softness, hydrophobic effect, washability and surface gloss under actual finishing process, addition amount, drying conditions and fabric/leather substrate. If combined with other additives, the compatibility, emulsion stability and storage stability should be verified.
How to verify from samples to mass production
First, agree on acceptance items
Keep the valid technical data, batch records and normal production data of the current materials. Convert customer complaints or historical anomalies into checkable items, such as pinholes, stratification, oil separation, demolding fouling, lubrication failure or feel differences.
Do a small test with the same conditions
Keep the current materials as a control. The candidate materials should use the same equipment, addition amount, mixing sequence and test conditions. Do not simultaneously adjust other variables. When a new formula is needed, set up another test group and record the reason.
Test production under real conditions
After the small test meets the requirements, confirm the scaling-up processing, actual contact materials and continuous operation performance. The aging time, temperature range, cycle times and wash times should be determined according to the product life and risks, and do not apply uniform qualified values.
Write the results in purchase and change requirements
Record the approved viscosity range, fluorine content requirements, specific gravity and refractive index range, testing method, applicable processes and restrictions, and agree on COA, retention samples, batch traceability and change notifications. After the sample passes, continue to observe the subsequent delivery batches.
The basis for judgment should be the pre-agreed acceptance standards, not "looks similar". If the candidate material only passes a certain test, the conclusion should also be limited to this test and corresponding conditions.
What information to prepare before inquiring from the supplier
An unclassified application summary can be provided first: material usage, target viscosity and test conditions, fluorine content requirements, operating temperature, addition amount, contact with substrate, formulation system, current problems encountered, target market and expected purchase volume. When there are requirements for degassing efficiency, skin feel, lubrication life, release residue, solvent resistance or compliance, the testing methods and acceptance standards should also be specified.
As a provider of solutions for the entire organic silicon industry chain, Aijota can discuss candidate specifications for the material range of IOTA 25M methyl fluorosilicone oil and the customer's operating conditions. After the initial selection, the corresponding technical documents, safety documents and batch inspection files should be checked. The specific applicability is confirmed through actual application verification.
FAQ
Can they be directly replaced if their viscosities are the same?
No. First, the actual measured values of the test temperature, unit, method and batch should be checked. Then, the fluorine content, specific gravity, refractive index, volatile matter and performance related to the application should be compared. Before application verification, it is not advisable to decide on replacement solely based on the nominal viscosity.
2. Is higher fluorine content always better?
Not necessarily. The fluorine content will affect surface tension, solvent resistance, hydrophobicity and compatibility. However, too high a content may increase costs and may also cause pinholes, migration or compatibility issues in certain formulations. The appropriate range should be selected based on actual usage.
3. Does the foaming reduction test represent the stability for mass production?
Not necessarily. The defoaming performance is affected by the stirring intensity, temperature, formulation composition, construction method and storage time. The defoaming speed, defoaming persistence and surface defects should be verified under real formulation and process conditions.
4. Can it be directly added to the cosmetic formulation?
It is necessary to first verify the emulsification stability, skin feel, storage stratification, odor and formulation compatibility. For products that come into contact with the human body, compliance and safety should also be evaluated according to the requirements of the target market. The applicability of the finished product cannot be judged solely based on the raw material indicators.
5. Can it be directly switched to the full-scale production after the small-scale test passes?
The scale-up production and product verification should be completed according to the risks. Especially when it involves lubrication reliability, demolding residue, coating surface defects or cosmetic stability. Before the switch, the batch traceability, acceptance standards and change notification mechanism should be clearly defined.
6. Can it still be used after the shelf life exceeds 12 months?
The shelf life is indicated as 12 months. It should be stored in a cool and dry environment. Whether it can be used after the shelf life has expired should be rechecked for appearance, viscosity, specific gravity, refractive index, volatile matter and application performance. It should also be confirmed through small-scale tests.
