Life cycle details of aerogel and rock wool for various scenarios (industrial pipelines / refineries / general factory buildings)
I. Aerogel insulation blanket (silicon dioxide aerogel felt)
Standard operating conditions (with complete waterproof outer layer, dry, conventional high-temperature pipelines)
Manufacturer's stated design life: 20 years or more
Long-term measured stable period: 15 to 25 years, continuous use at 650°C for 20 years with a thermal conductivity attenuation of less than 10%
Building sealed insulation (no rain erosion): Imported aerogel certified life ≥ 50 years
Adverse conditions (high humidity, frequent condensation, pipeline vibration, open-air without protection)
With CUI corrosion risk, water vapor long-term penetration: 12 to 18 years
Core longevity reasons
Whole body water repellent does not absorb water, will not be dampened and collapse; nano structure resists vibration, no settlement and stratification, almost no maintenance required, no large-scale replacement within 20 years.
II. Rock wool (basalt rock wool)
Life cycle divided into two types of scenarios
1. Building walls / roofs, dry boiler rooms, indoor storage tanks (complete waterproof layer)
High-quality high-density rock wool: 20 to 30 years; international long-term measured samples have stable use for over 65 years without failure
2. Industrial steam pipelines, outdoor pipelines of refineries, high-humidity condensation environment (most common scenarios)
Rock wool is hydrophilic, water vapor intrusion causes fiber agglomeration and significant decline in insulation performance, prone to settlement and stratification due to pipeline vibration:
Common rock wool (without tight waterproof aluminum skin): 5 to 8 years must be inspected and replaced
Thick waterproof outer layer, regular inspection and leak repair: can be extended to 10 to 15 years
Low-quality recycled rock wool
Insufficient density, loose fibers, in humid environment, powder failure and failure within 3 to 5 years.
III. Intuitive comparison of the life cycles of the two (factory / refinery pipeline scenarios) Table
Usage environment: Aerogel, Rockwool
Dry indoor spaces, boilers, sealed equipment: 20-25 years; Outdoor steam pipelines, prone to condensation, with CUI risk: 15-20 years; 5-8 years for extremely cold/very hot alternating conditions, with long-term pipe vibration: 20 years with stable performance without decay; 3-6 years for degradation due to settlement and failure
Four. Core factors influencing key lifespan
Moisture resistance is the biggest differentiator
Aerogel is hydrophobic, and water vapor does not affect its performance; Rockwool's performance drops sharply when exposed to water, and its lifespan is directly halved.
Vibration and settlement
When the pipeline is continuously vibrating, the rockwool fibers will layer and sink, making the upper part of the insulation layer thinner; Aerogel's flexible integrated structure has no settlement problem.
Maintenance cost differences
Aerogel requires almost no maintenance for 20 years; Rockwool needs to check the waterproof protection layer, repair leaks, and increase operation and maintenance downtime costs every 2-3 years.
Material quality
High-purity silica aerogel has stable lifespan; Low-density recycled rockwool has a significantly shortened lifespan.
Summary of selection reference
Refinery, open-air pipelines, damp pipe galleries, confined spaces, CUI prevention requirements: Aerogel is preferred, with 20-year long-lasting performance and no frequent replacement needed;
Dry factory walls, sealed boilers, limited budget, ample space: Rockwool has a higher cost-performance ratio, and can be used for over 20 years in dry environments.
