Unveiling the Secrets of Aerogel Sheets: A Comprehensive Look at Their Five Key Applications

Hits: 238 img

Aerogel felt is a flexible thermal insulation material primarily composed of nano-silica or metal aerogels, reinforced with materials such as glass fiber. Its key advantages include extremely low thermal conductivity (approximately 0.02 W/m·K), wide temperature resistance (-200°C to 1000°C), Class A1 fire resistance, hydrophobic and moisture-resistant properties, and lightweight construction that facilitates easy installation. It is widely used in industries such as manufacturing, construction, transportation, and energy.
1. Industrial High-Temperature Thermal Insulation (Core Applications)
Petrochemical Industry: Insulation for high-temperature steam pipelines, refining and petrochemical units, storage tanks, heating furnaces, and cracking furnaces—such as projects at Gulei Petrochemical and Yumen Oilfield.
Power & Energy: Insulation for main steam pipelines in thermal/nuclear power plants, turbines, boiler casings, chimneys, and high-temperature flue ducts.
Metallurgy & Building Materials: Insulation for steel heating furnaces, annealing furnaces, ceramic tunnel kilns, and glass melting furnace walls/ceilings, reducing energy consumption by approximately 25%.
Equipment Insulation: Insulation for injection molding machines, extruders, high-temperature reactors, removable insulation sleeves, and steam valves/flanges.
II. New Energy Vehicles
Thermal insulation pads between lithium battery cells, fire-resistant layers on battery modules and battery pack covers are critical to ensuring battery safety. This is currently the fastest-growing application driven by both policy and market demand. By 2026, numerous vehicle models have adopted aerogel composite thermal insulation solutions.
III. Building Energy Efficiency and Ultra-Low Energy Consumption
Exterior walls / roofs: Exterior insulation for passive ultra-low energy buildings and near-zero energy buildings, roof insulation—thin-layer, high-performance insulation that saves space.
Interior / underfloor heating: Insulation layer for floor heating systems, sound and thermal insulation for partition walls, ceiling insulation—balancing energy efficiency and noise reduction.
Fire protection barriers: Firewalls in buildings, fire sealing for cable shafts and pipe shafts—A1 class non-combustible material enhancing fire safety.
IV. Low-Temperature and Special Applications
LNG / cryogenics: Thermal insulation for LNG pipelines, storage tanks, and transport vessels; resistant to -200°C, minimizing cold loss and frost formation.
Home appliances and electronics: Thermal insulation for high-end refrigerators/freezers, water heaters, coffee machines; heat dissipation and insulation for lithium batteries, energy storage systems, and server cabinets.
Marine and shipbuilding: Insulation for engine rooms, chimneys, and piping; thermal insulation and fireproofing for offshore platforms and lifeboats.
V. Aerospace
Leveraging the extremely low density and superior thermal insulation properties of aerogel blankets, they are used as thermal insulation layers in aircraft and spacecraft, ensuring safety under extreme temperature conditions while reducing weight.
