What are the uses of aerogel fibers?

Hits: 99 img

Aerogel has extremely high insulation, moisture absorption and breathability properties, and its application scope is also very wide. Obviously, it is used to make winter protection clothing, sports clothes, etc. With the further development of textile fiber technology, products made from aerogel fibers, such as parts of spacesuits, can be applied to the aerospace field.
Those who enjoy outdoor sports, especially those who love mountain climbing, exploration and crossing, cannot avoid the issue of their own safety in the complex environment in the wild, especially in low-temperature conditions. According to laboratory data, the insulation performance of aerogel fibers at low temperatures is 2.8 times that of cotton fabric, and its heat enthalpy can reach 162 J/g. It can maintain its insulation and heat preservation performance for a long time in extreme environments ranging from minus 196 degrees Celsius to 300 degrees Celsius. Even if aerogel fibers are processed and made into winter protection clothing, they can still play a warming role in extremely cold temperatures.
Meanwhile, the extremely high insulation, moisture absorption and breathability of aerogel fibers make them highly suitable for application in products such as thermal underwear. The biggest problem with ordinary thermal underwear is that it is good at keeping warm but not breathable. When entering a room from the outdoors in winter, as the temperature rises, the moisture produced by the human body is difficult to be expelled, resulting in a significant reduction in the comfort of the wearer. However, using aerogel fibers can perfectly solve these problems.
Aerogel fibers have a wide range of applications. Besides outdoor clothing and thermal underwear, they can also be used in bulletproof vests, tents, sleeping bags, knee pads, yoga clothes and other fields.
At present, the application of aerogel fibers in the textile and clothing market is mainly focused on winter cold protection and warmth retention products. Traditionally, this clothing sub-market has been largely dominated by cotton, down, wool, cashmere, and acrylic products.
Industry insiders are well aware that the thermal insulation performance of fiber materials is directly proportional to the content of static air inside the fibers, inversely proportional to the diameter of the fibers, and inversely proportional to the overall density of the material. And aerogel fibers have an extremely high porosity and a relatively high specific surface area. Therefore, theoretically, they are currently the best type of textile and clothing fiber material for heat insulation and preservation. As a result, aerogel fibers may also be a direction for the future development of thermal insulation fibers.
