Silicone oil generally refers to linear polysiloxane products that remain liquid at room temperature and is the second most consumed product among organosilicon deep-processed products. Alkyl-modified silicone oil is a new material generated by replacing some of the methyl groups in the side chain structure of polysiloxane with alkyl groups through grafting and reconstruction. It is also known as methyl-alkyl polysiloxane emulsion and is produced by directly conducting a hydrosilylation reaction between methyl hydrogen-containing silicone oil and long-chain alkenes.
Compared with ordinary silicone oil, alkyl-modified silicone oil has better demolding, oleophilicity, lubricity, defoaming, anti-sticking and hydrophobic properties, and can be widely used in the fields of plastics, rubber, coatings, etc. At the same time, it can also be used as a hydrophobic agent, anti-freezing agent, impact modifier, etc. However, due to factors such as high product prices, the current domestic market capacity of alkyl-modified silicone oil is relatively small, and the production capacity and output of enterprises in the industry are relatively limited. According to the "2024-2029 China Alkyl-Modified Silicone Oil Industry Market Deep Research and Development Prospect Report" released by NewSight Industry Research Center, the production capacity of alkyl-modified silicone oil in China was less than 20,000 tons in 2022.
From the perspective of downstream applications, at present, alkyl-modified silicone oil is mainly used in the fields of plastics, rubber, coatings and lubricating grease, while its application in the daily chemical field is still relatively small. In the future, with the deepening of research on the application of alkyl-modified silicone oil by domestic research institutions and enterprises and the reduction of production costs, the application scope of alkyl-modified silicone oil is expected to be further expanded.
Industry analysts say that alkyl-modified silicone oil, in addition to having the general properties of silicone oil (such as resistance to high and low temperatures, wettability, and flexibility), also has better smoothness, wear resistance, better solubility with other oils, as well as good moisturizing, smoothing, and anti-cracking functions. It can be used as an emulsifier, brightener, hydrophobic agent, lubricant, and smoothness agent in daily chemical products. It is expected that in the coming years, with the technological maturity and accumulation of the domestic alkyl-modified silicone oil industry, the application of alkyl-modified silicone oil in the daily chemical industry is likely to increase.
