The "key technologies and equipment for hardness removal of drinking water" developed by the team of Professor Liu Cheng and Professor Chen Wei of Hehai University was selected as one of the eight achievements of promotion list of mature and applicable water conservancy scientific and technological achievements in the field of rural drinking water safety this year.

Technical introduction and technical indicators
The key technology of hardness removal for drinking water is based on the basic principle of chemical softening, the introduction of induced crystal process as a strengthening means, combined with the basic theory of precipitation and solid-liquid separation, through the optimization of chemical composition and hydraulic conditions of softening agent, the effect of hardness removal is significantly improved, the applicability of technology is expanded, and the "zero discharge" of production process wastewater is realized. The developed hardness removal technology can solve the problems of frequent replacement of induced crystal nucleus, no removal of magnesium hardness and permanent hardness, and poor stability of effluent water quality existing in conventional crystal (induced) softening technology, and can be applied in different scale water plants and wastewater hardness removal projects.
Technical indicators:
1) It is suitable for high hardness underground and surface water with total hardness less than 1000mg / L.
2) The floor area is about 200-300m2 / (104m3 / D).
3) No production waste water is generated, and the water production rate is close to 100%.
4) The replacement period of crystal nucleus is 45-60 days.
5) The self nucleation is realized without the addition of induced nuclei.
6) The operation cost is 0.1 ~ 0.3 yuan / m3 (the removal amount is less than 300).
7) The construction cost is about 280-500 yuan / (m3 / D).
8) The effluent can be controlled as required, which can be lower than 50mg / L.

Technology R & D process
The key technology and equipment for hardness removal of drinking water is developed by the R & D team of Hehai University for 10 years, which has been gradually improved through different stages of development, such as laboratory small test and pilot test, field small test and pilot test, field production test, demonstration project construction, promotion and Application, etc., and has obtained 6 related authorized invention patents. During the research process, it has been greatly supported by the Ministry of science and technology of the people's Republic of China (national major science and technology special project), Shandong water supply and drainage monitoring center, Pingyin water company, Zoucheng water company, Jiangsu Yongguan, Jiangsu Heqing Haiyan, etc. At present, it is working with Shandong water supply and drainage monitoring center and other units to prepare the technical specification for induced crystallization softening of urban water supply, which will be released in the second half of 2020, which can further standardize the application of technology and later maintenance management.
