Hehai University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of education with a history of one hundred years, characterized by water conservancy, dominated by engineering and coordinated development of multi disciplines. It is a university that implements the key construction of national 211 project, the construction of innovation platform of national advantageous disciplines and the construction of first-class disciplines.
In 1952, the Department of water conservancy of Nanjing University, the Department of water conservancy of Jiaotong University, Tongji University, Zhejiang University and East China Water Conservancy College established east China Water Conservancy College. In 1985, the traditional name of Hehai University was restored. Comrade Deng Xiaoping wrote the name of the University, which is now "Hehai". Institute of hydrology and water resources
The former of the Institute of hydrology and water resources is the Department of hydrology of East China Institute of water resources established in 1952; it was renamed as the Department of water resources and hydrology in 1984; in 1995, the internal organization of the University was adjusted, and the Department of water resources and hydrology and the school of Environmental Science and engineering were merged to establish the school of hydrology and water resources and environment; in 2002, it was adjusted as the school of water resources and environment; in 2007, it was renamed as the school of hydrology and water resources.
In 1988, hydrology and water resources discipline was rated as national key discipline (the only discipline in China), and then it was rated as national key discipline twice in 2002 and 2007. In 1996, 2002 and 2008, hydrology and water resources discipline were listed in the "Ninth Five Year Plan", "Tenth Five Year Plan" and "Eleventh Five Year Plan" national "211 Project" key discipline construction projects. In 2008, the innovation and intelligence introduction base of hydrology and water resources discipline was selected into the "university discipline innovation and intelligence introduction plan" (111 plan) of the Ministry of education and the State Administration of foreign experts. In 2008, the Ministry of education and the Ministry of Finance approved the construction of "global water cycle and national water security" advantage discipline innovation platform (commonly known as "small 985").

Water conservancy engineering is a national key discipline, and it is an advantage discipline of Hehai University.
